Zorats Karer ("mighty stones") or Karaunj is an ancient megalithic complex, which is an analogue of the world – famous Stonehenge.
Scientists believe that Karaunj was installed much earlier, although the exact age of the monument has not yet been found out. Karaunj consists of several groups of vertically installed stones, which are arranged in a certain order. The central part forms an oval consisting of 40 stones.
In the very center there are ruins that supposedly used to be an ancient temple. The proportions of this ruined structure exactly correspond to the proportions of the famous pagan temple of Garni. In some stones, you can notice round through holes. According to one version, Karaunj was an ancient observatory, and the holes helped to monitor the heavenly bodies and make calculations of their path.
