The Vayots Dzor district is located in the south-east of the country, where the main plantations of the Areni-Noir variety are located, from which a large number of red wines are currently produced.
The oldest vines of grapes that have been growing for several millennia are twining here. It was here in 2011 that the oldest winery was discovered with an age of about 6,100 years. Archaeologists have unearthed a press for wine production, a clay vessel for fermentation and storage of wine-karas, vines and even grape seeds in the Areni — 1 cave.
