VAYOTS DZOR IS THE MAIN WINE-GROWING REGION OF ARMENIA

The Vayots Dzor district is located in the south-east of the country, where the main plantations of the Areni-Noir variety are located, from which a large number of red wines are currently produced.

The oldest vines of grapes that have been growing for several millennia are twining here. It was here in 2011 that the oldest winery was discovered with an age of about 6,100 years. Archaeologists have unearthed a press for wine production, a clay vessel for fermentation and storage of wine-karas, vines and even grape seeds in the Areni — 1 cave. All this confirms the well-known theory that Armenia was originally the main center of wine production since ancient times.

The archaeological discoveries made in the south of the neighboring countries of Georgia and modern Turkey complement the overall picture: the territory of Ancient Armenia was much larger than the existing one, and it included all the previously listed areas, and the Armenian Highlands with Mount Ararat, where according to the Holy Scripture the first vineyard appeared, are just in the center, between them.

The presence of an early tradition of winemaking in Armenia is also confirmed by ancient written sources. Ancient historians Strabo, Xenophon and the" father of history " Herodotus .

The creators of the bas-relief on the walls of the ancient Iranian city of Persepolis (6th-5th century BC) they also paid tribute to the wine: on the eastern staircase of the apadana [a large hall with columns and a roof for solemn royal receptions. the Armenian delegation is depicted, which presents the tsar with its best gifts — horses and, of course, wine.
