The village of Khndzoresk was created jointly by nature itself and human labor. A large number of ancient caves are located on the territory of Khndzoresk.
In some places, the caves are arranged in several tiers, like a multi-storey house. m.The history of the caves of Khndzoresk has more than a thousand years. It is believed that people began to live in stone caves to hide from enemies. The lowest residential tier was located at a height of 3-4 meters, and it was possible to climb into the caves only by a rope lowered from above.
The caves were deepened and landscaped by the residents of Khndzoresk themselves. Each "cave house" resembled a 2-3-room apartment, where there was a separate room for cooking, a place to sleep, etc.The roofs of the lower tiers served as gardens for the upper ones. At the beginning of the 20th century, there were about 8 thousand inhabitants in the caves of Khndzoresk. People continued to live here until the 1950s, after which, by the decision of the Soviet authorities, they were relocated to a village built nearby, which was called “New Khndzoresk”.
Old and New Khndzoresk are considered a single settlement today. The two parts of the village are located on different sides of the gorge, which are connected by a suspension bridge.
