THE MOUNTAINOUS ARAGATSOTN REGION

Aragatsotn province is located in the west of Armenia. The administrative center is the city of Ashtarak.

The geographical location of the Aragatsotn region is notable for the fact that it is located between the capital of Armenia, Yerevan, and the highest mountain of the country, Aragats, whose height is 4090 meters. The Kasakh River, together with its tributaries Ambred and Geharod, is the main waterway in the region. The Aparan reservoir has been built on the Kasakh River. Mastary, a mudflow stream that periodically damages crops, became famous. Near the top of Aragats there is Lake Kari, otherwise called Stone Lake.

Alpine meadows are spread out in high-altitude areas, often crossed by deep gorges and rocks. In some places, small oak groves grow. At the top of Aragats, winter lasts almost the whole year and in summer there are snow deposits there.

There are not only natural, but also historical and architectural monuments in the Aragatsotn region. There are many dilapidated and preserved monuments of the Middle Ages throughout the region. Not far from the center of the region, in the village of Oshakan, the creator of the Armenian script, Saint Mersop Mashtots, who died in 440, is buried. His grave is a shrine for Armenians all over the world. In addition, there are many fortresses, churches, chapels, khachkars, tombs, monasteries, tombstones, ancient bridges, basilicas and other structures on the territory of the region.
