BIRD CAVE IN ARENI

The Bird cave is located near a tributary of the Arpa Gnishik River, at an altitude of 30 m. It is located directly behind the coastal restaurant, in the rock ( when turning to the gorge from the right side). You can get here by climbing the path leading to the triangular entrance to the cave.

The cave is a chain of rocky rooms connected by narrow passages. In the upper parts of the rock, it has several more cracks of smaller diameter. The entrance is partially covered with large stones.

This cave belongs to the class of cluster-karst caves, as it was formed in limestone conglomerates. Since 2007, archaeological excavations have been carried out here. As a result, materials dating back to 4200-3500 BC were found: plant remains, dishes, grape and apricot seeds, fabric knitted from reeds, women's jewelry, a part of the body of a mummified goat, and more.

The oldest shoes in the world were found during archaeological excavations carried out in the village of Areni in the Vayots Dzor region. The shoes stuffed with greenery are designed for the right foot; the shoe is quite small; according to European standards, it corresponds to the current size 37. It was discovered by the head of the team of archaeologists, a specialist at the Irish University of Cork, Ron Pinhasi. In his opinion, the greens were needed to support the shape of the shoes. Laboratory tests have determined that the oldest shoe has a history of 5637-5387 years.

A few years ago, a place adapted for the production of wine was discovered in the Cave of Birds. This is the oldest winery in the world with a 6,100-year history. The village has a huge potential for historical, cultural, ecological, extreme and wine tourism. Every year, a harvest/wine festival is organized in the village of Areni, where the production of the community of Areni and nearby villages is presented.
